SIJHSAA Jim Burnes Leadership Award

The SIJHSAA and Baysinger Architects are pleased to announce the opening of 2024-2025 nominations for the Jim Burnes Leadership Award.

The SIJHSAA is one of two organizations in Illinois that sponsors junior high athletics. It comprises over 180 schools throughout Southern Illinois and is divided into ten geographical regions.

This award is for 8th graders only and will be based on the following criteria: GPA, sports participation, community activities, specific honors, a typed essay, and recommendations from inside the school and community. Please be sure to look over the criteria and dates on the forms.

SIJHSAA Jim Burnes Leadership Award Information

Each school will get to nominate one person. The school athletic director will nominate this person. This person will also be the leadership award winner for their school and will receive a certificate from the SIJHSAA proclaiming them the Leadership Award winner from their school. The winner of this award will then proceed on to the regional level, where the winner will be honored with a plaque and a luncheon honoring their accomplishments.

These winners, as well as all of the applicants for this award, reflect the true meaning of the SIJHSAA motto which states, "Your reputation can be made,or even destroyed in a moment. Your character is developed over a lifetime." These student athletes have worked extremely hard to get to where they are now and I am sure that they are destined for even greater things in the future. 
 
The SIJHSAA would like to thank Baysinger Architects for their help in sponsoring this award.

Press Release about 2020 SIJHSAA Fall Sports

The SIJHSAA Board of Control had a special meeting on Thursday, July 30, 2020 at 8:30am via zoom. The BOC made final decisions concerning the fall sports of baseball, softball, girls and boys cross country. The BOC voted to approve the above mentioned sports in conjunction with the specifications set down by the Illinois High School Athletic Association and the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Listed below is a brief description of major guidelines for the above mentioned sports.

Baseball/Softball

Baseball-Softball Return to Play Guidelines for 2020 (PDF) UPDATED 8/28/2020

  • Use IHSA Phase 4 Guidelines for practices and contests.
  • Schools may play a maximum of 2 Varsity/8th grade contests per week and no tournaments. Of these contests, one can be a double header (against same opponent) (3 games in a given week if one of the contests is a DH)
  • JV /7th grade teams have the same limitation.
  • Spectator and group gatherings subject to IDPH guidelines during this time.
  • State Series TBD

Cross Country

Cross Country Return to Play Guidelines for 2020 (PDF) UPDATED 8/28/2020

  • Use IHSA Phase 4 Guidelines for practices and contests.
  • Schools limited to a maximum of 2 Varsity/8th grade meets per week. (maximum 3 teams in a meet)
  • JV/7th grade teams have the same limitations (maximum 3 teams in a meet)
  • Spectator and group gatherings subject to IDPH guidelines during this time.
  • State Series TBD

Note:

  • Competitions should be within an Illinois Covid Region or within a conference (During Conference Competitions you may compete outside your Illinois Covid Region)
  • If the Governor places all schools on remote learning, all SIJHSAA sports will be suspended or canceled.
  • Any schools in an Ilinois Covid Region that is placed in Phase 3 or lower, of the Governors Restore Illilnois Plan, all sports and or sport state series in that region will be suspended or canceled.
  • The eligibility of students that are remote learning is the decision of the member school.

The Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association is one of two governing bodies of junior high sports in the state of Illinois.The  SIJHSAA was founded in 1921 and its first championship competition held was in basketball in 1928. The tourney was held in DuQuoin with Herrin winning the first championship. The SIJHSAA currently sponsors 23 "state" tournaments at the 8th grade level each year in the sports of baseball, softball, cross-country, basketball, bowling,  volleyball, golf and track.
